Avi Shmueli
Several years ago, my wife and I settled permanently on Orcas Island. I soon embarked on a journey to acclimate to my new natural surroundings. It was a vibrant, secluded, and serene place, often shrouded in darkness and dampness. To process this captivating landscape, I turned to painting, specifically in oil. My artistic expression primarily took the form of expressionistic landscapes, using the rural scenes I encountered during my walks with my dog, Ranger.
My creative process typically begins with capturing snapshots of my subject matter. These digital images serve as a starting point, often leading to compositional edits. From the comfort of my studio, I transition to the canvas, where I bring these visions to life. When everything goes smoothly, the final painting is always a welcome surprise.
My preferred canvas format is the square, ranging from 16” to 26”, but I often experiment with diptychs, which create an intriguing interplay between the panels. These panels are not entirely independent entities, but they each contribute to the overall composition.
My path to work in art was not smooth. I did not go to art school and spent much of my career building or managing product development in the world of search algorithms, data analysis, and collaboration software. I am very lucky I found my way to art.
