BJ Arnold

B.J. Arnold is a mixed-media artist based on Orcas Island, where she has lived since 1988. Originally from Southern California—Arcadia, Huntington Beach, and Half Moon Bay—B.J. has long been drawn to the beauty of the natural world. Her current work, primarily in acrylic, is inspired by the vibrant textures and shifting moods of nature: rocks, trees, flowers, water, seasons, landscapes, and the play of color and light.

B.J.’s artistic journey began with the encouragement of a dear friend, Joan Moe, who opened the door to creative exploration. A pivotal moment came after reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards—B.J. realized she could draw, and more importantly, that she was an artist. What followed was a joyful path of experimentation, classes, and workshops across a variety of disciplines, from beaded jewelry and 3D fabric art to fused glass, oil/cold wax, collage, and her current love: acrylic painting.

Themes of joy, hope, and the promise of renewal—especially the magic of spring—are at the heart of her work. Deeply influenced by artists like Louise Fletcher and Brian Rutenberg, B.J. approaches her studio practice with spontaneity, curiosity, and a desire to connect. She hopes her art offers viewers a sense of joy, serenity, and an invitation to explore their own creative worlds.

A member of Orcas Artworks since the 1990s, B.J. treasures the camaraderie of fellow artists and the chance to meet visitors from around the globe. For her, the island’s natural serenity and vibrant community continue to nourish a lifelong journey of discovery and expression.
