Rose Cope
I was raised in the environment of my family’s contemporary Japanese art gallery, where I was encouraged to explore creativity from an early age. Although my artistic path began with painting, I spent over a decade channeling my energy into motherhood, fiber arts, retail design, and business ownership before returning fully to my practice.
My current work draws inspiration from memory, textiles, color, and reflective light. I hope to evoke a sense of familiarity, like recalling a dream or memory: resonant yet elusive, poetic in its openness.
I paint in oil and my process involves many layers and even more patience. I begin with a loose wash of color, tape off sections, and paint each strip individually. Most of the image is hidden and revealed slowly. I love when I am surprised by an unusual color combination.
I work from my home studio on Orcas Island, Washington, where I live with my four children and three cats.
